In first place, Christof Luckas sees the person and not the disability he or she has. With his camera he therefore prefers teasing out the special personality of the portrayed person during the shootings. If he also makes them happy by doing that – perfect. Which country and its people photographically attract him the most, he tells us on REHACARE.com.
Christof Luckas: I like laughing about everyday things that happen unexpected. Recently I dialed the wrong phone number and so I wanted to make an appointment for checking my teeth with a totally unknown woman. That was funny.
What have you always been wanting to do and why have you never done this so far?
Christof Luckas: I would like to go on a photo trip through India and portray interesting people there. My wheelchair makes this a challenge. But with assistance and good planning it might work out.
Which person has influenced you most?
Christof Luckas: Many impressive people inspire me frequently. And I am very thankful for this. But my wife actually influenced me the most. Since many years she is my biggest fan and makes a lot possible for me. This gives me wings and makes me happy.
You have the chance to become the German Federal Commissioner for the Disabled. What would you do first?
Christof Luckas: I think that the very slow implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in Germany is really embarrassing. Inclusion is a human right, no benefit. So my first official act would be demanding a certain percentage of people with disabilities in the Bundestag and also in the state parliaments. Although roundabout 10 percent of the people have a disability, it is a fact that disabled people do not really take place in politics.
Your life is made into a film: Who would represent you?
Christof Luckas: George Clooney. He bears the biggest likeness to me.
I would like to be ...
Christof Luckas: a mountain climber. I’d love to!
Which questions would you like answered the most?
Christof Luckas: Is the light on in the fridge?
What I finally want to say...
Christof Luckas: Many of my protagonists in front of the camera also have a disability. So I am really open-minded, cautious and considerate. I am totally fascinated when it happens during a shooting that the meaning of the disability steps back and you get to see the essence of a person: charisma and personality.
