Self-determined participation: Drive-by-wire technology for accessible driving

Sabine, a 51-year-old driver from Germany, has experienced this first-hand. For over 16 years and more than 208,000 kilometers, she has relied on the Space Drive system, which enables her to drive safely and independently. Now, she is transitioning to the next generation of assistive driving technology in her new VW T6.1, continuing her journey towards full autonomy.

After many years with her trusted Kia Carnival, affectionately called 'Moby Dick', Sabine is now moving on to a new vehicle, a VW T6.1 she has named 'Enterprise'. This transition marks an important milestone in her mobility journey. Equipped with the latest version of the Space Drive system, the vehicle offers enhanced features tailored to her specific needs.

Instead of a mini steering wheel and accelerator/brake lever, Sabine now controls her vehicle using two joysticks. With her left hand, she accelerates and brakes, while her right hand steers. "It was strange at first," she recalls, "but after a bit of practice, especially on the challenging, narrow and winding roads around the Aichelau Mobility Park, it worked beautifully."

The new vehicle integrates advanced assistive technologies designed to improve comfort and safety. The PARAVAN Touch system, along with voice control, allows Sabine to manage auxiliary functions with ease. "It is a real relief," she explains. One of the most significant improvements for her is the ability to independently adjust the sun visor, a function she had been unable to use for years. "It was either up or down and I always had to ask someone to help me. Now I can do it myself – it's a great feeling!"

Additional vehicle functions, including turn signals, headlights, the horn, and windshield wipers, are now much more intuitive to operate. Previously, she relied on a button-based system, where pressing the button a certain number of times activated different commands. With the new system, these functions are simpler to control, enhancing her overall driving experience. 

Since 2017, Sabine has also been using the PARAVAN PR 50 power wheelchair as her driver’s seat. The power wheelchair, certified for use as a driver’s seat, allows her to position herself directly at the steering controls. With a simple click, the PR 50 locks into place via a docking station, providing stability and flexibility without compromising safety.

For Sabine, mobility is more than just transportation; it represents independence. She commutes to her job at the job center and participates in numerous volunteer activities, all without relying on external assistance. "For me, mobility means freedom and independence. When I drove myself to the registration office with the papers, it was an overwhelming moment," she shares. "I do everything in my daily life by car!" 

Although parting with her long-trusted vehicle was difficult, she has embraced the transition. "The first few trips were challenging and I really missed my old car," Sabine admits. However, after two months, her enthusiasm has prevailed. "I have to say that the bus is really fun. I've found the ideal seating position and now I'm driving the car – not the car driving me!" she says with a smile.
